WBC Welterweight champion Danny “Swift” Garcia improved to 33-0 with 19 knockouts after stopping the overmatched Samuel Vargas in the seventh round on Saturday night in the former’s native Philadelphia. It was a non-title bout.

LOS ANGELES, CA – JANUARY 23: Referee Jack Reiss holds up the hand of Danny Garcia after he defeated Robert Guerrero on unanimous decision to win the WBC championship welterweight belt at Staples Center January 23, 2016 in Los Angeles, California.

This fight was meant to be a tuneup for Garcia, and it was clear that’s what it would be early in the fight. Garcia dropped Vargas with a counter right hand in the first round. Vargas was stunned, but he consciously waited until the eight count before rising to his feet.

From that point on, Vargas showed heart, but he was nothing more than target practice for Garcia up until the stoppage in the seventh round.

Garcia showed little to no ring rust despite a 10-month layoff.

That wasn’t the case.

Garcia’s night began with flair as he was escorted to the ring by basketball Hall of Famer and Philly legend Allen Iverson.

Garcia didn’t let the hometown fans or his legendary friend down. Garcia has an agreement in place to face WBA Welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman in a unification bout.

Thurman was handling color commentary for Spike TV and Garcia had a special message for him during his post-fight interview. One-Time had a rapid response for his new rival:

This could be an exciting fight for fans, and it’s the kind of bout the boxing community was hoping to see more often from the Premier Boxing Champions network.

Barring any setbacks, fight fans should be treated to a nice matchup in the first quarter of 2017.
